Abstract
312,765. Berger, M., and United Cigarette Machine Co. Akt.-Ges. April 19, 1928. Cigarette-making machines.-The rotary knife of the, cut-off mechanism of a continuous-rod machine, having a reciprocating or oscillating movement in the direction of its axis, is driven at such a speed in relation to that of the knifecarrier that, whilst being sharpened at one or both ends of its stroke by contact with a grinding- tool or tools, either successive portions of the edge are ground in successive strokes, or the whole of the edge contacts with the tool. Fig. 1 shows a construction in which the knife n has a planebry motion, being mounted on a spindle i in a carrier f rotated by a toothed wheel e, the knife being driven by a pinion p on its spindle and internal teeth r on a casing b, the ratio of the speed of the knife to that of the carrier being such that successive portions of the knife-edge are ground. In a modification, Fig. 3, the knife 4 is mounted on a rotary disc 1 and is driven by a belt 7 running over a fixed pulley 6..In a further modification, a belt drive is employed,. the knife being driven independently of the carrier and arranged to rotate at such a speed that its whole edge is ground at each contact with the grinding-tool. The knife may be driven by an electric motor mounted on the carrier, or by a friction drive.
