Abstract

312,683. Camco (Machinery), Ltd., (Assignees of Hitchcock, R.). May 31, 1928, [Convention date]. Folding paper.-In machines for producing folded signatures from printed sheets each sheet is divided into four parts by two consecutive slitting operations during its longitudinal travel, and the parts are folded, if required, prior to the second slitting operation. The original undivided sheets are fed from a table 11, Fig. 1, as described in Specification 244,339, [Class 100 (i), Feeding and delivering webs &c.], on to an inclined-roller feed-table 12 where they are aligned against a side gauge 14 in the usual manner. Each sheet A leaving the table 12 is slit into two parts B<1>, B<2> by a cutter 19 and has its edge opposite to the aligning edge trimmed by a cutter 19<1>. The two parts of the sheet pass on to a feed-table 22 having a central dividing bar 23 on both sides of which are sets of inclined rollers 24, 25 aligning the parts B<1>, B<2> against side gauges 14<1> and forwarding them into a set of buckling folders 26. Sheet-deflectors 28, Fig. 9, may be provided on the folder plates 27 extending only half the width of the plates so that different folds may be imparted to the sheets B<1>, B<2>. After traversing the folders 26, the sheets may be further subdivided into smaller sheets C<1> - - C<4> by slitters 32 from which they are delivered to two sets of inclined rollers 35, 36 respectively which direct the sheets C<1>, C<2> and C<3>, C<4> in opposite directions perpendicular to their previous direction along adjustable guides 37, 37<1> respectively to further apparatus which is duplicated at each side of the machine. Crossfolds are imparted to the sheets C<1>, C<2> by folders 40 situated at the delivery end of the rollers 35, and the sheets may be further subdivided by slitters 43 into parts such as D', D<2> before reaching a final inclined-roller feed-table 44 forwarding the sheets at right-angles to their previous path into a final set of buckling-folders 55 which may be provided with deflectors 28 as in the case of the folders 26. If the sheets C', C<2> are not cut or if the printing thereon is identical so that the two parts D<1>, D<2> of each sheet C', C<2> are identical, the sheets received on the table 44 are forwarded in angle-line into the folds are imparted to the sheets C<1>, C<2> by folders stacker belts 60, 61 by mechanism 57 as described in Specification 308,352. If, however, the sheets C<1>, C<2> are differently printed, the parts D<1>, D<2> are forwarded along separate parallel paths by providing two gauges 46, 48 on the table 44 and arranging a short feed-belt 50 above the table 44 to forward the part D<1> up to the gauge 46. The sorting-mechanism 57 in this case consists of two sorting units independently operated and arranged side-by-side so as to deal with the two lines E<1>, E<2> of sheets emerging from the final folders and adapted to be coupled together when only a single-line delivery is being used. With this arrangement, alternative pairs of sheets E<1>, E<2> are delivered to the two belts 60, 61 in side-by-side relation. The mechanism for dealing with the sheets C<3>, C<4> is identical with that for the sheets C<1>, C<2>.
