Abstract

270,663. Spiess, G. May 7, 1926, [Convention date]. Delivery apparatus; cutting apparatus. - Sheets, e.g. printed sheets, fed to a folding- machine are cut into smaller sheets by a longitudinal slitter immediately before or after the first folding operation and the smaller sheets are forwarded separately to mechanism for further folding. In a machine employing buckling folders and adapted to deal with large sheets cut into two equal sheets, the original sheets are aligned along a table 2, Fig. 1, before passing to the first folder 8. From the folder 8 the sheet is forwarded by rollers 15 and a guide 22 to slitters 24, and the smaller sheets pass into a - guide 23 until they reach a stop 25, Fig. 3, when inclined rollers 26 feed the sheets at right-angles to their former path and one behind the other into a folder 28 which imparts the first crossfolds. The sheets pass from the folder 28 with half-a-width between them and are forwarded to a stop 30 where inclined rollers 31 feed them into a folder 33 from which they issue on to a delivery band 36. If the two sheets cut from the original sheet are printed differently, they are delivered to separate bands 43, 44, Fig. 3, a deflector device comprising conveyer bands 37 and guides 39 pivoted at 40 and operated by hand or automatically through links 41, 42 being provided to divert the sheets to either of the bands 43, 44. The machine may be adapted to give a series of parallel folds without any cutting by moving the guides 22, 23 and the slitters 24 to the right, Fig. 1, away from the rollers 15, fitting stopplates where deflectors are shown, and pivoting an arm 20 down so that a guide 17 and stopplate 13 carried thereby are in position adjacent to the rollers 15 so as to direct the folded sheet to a delivery band 19. In a modified form, the cross-folding apparatus is duplicated on each side of the feed-table and half the rollers 26 are inclined in each direction, so that one set of printed sheets is directed to each side of the machine, and the two delivery bands corresponding to the bands 43, 44 are arranged parallel to the feedtable. For dealing with sheets cut to different sizes, the sheets are fed from a table 2, Fig. 9, through a folder 8, and then forwarded to slitters 24 cutting each sheet into two equal parts. One part passes through a guide 46 into a guide 49 until it abuts against a stop 51 and the other part passes through similar guides 45, 48 until it abuts against a stop 50. The two parts are then forwarded side by side at right-angles to their former path by inclined rollers 53, 52 respectively, into guides 56, 55, Fig. 8, directing them to the first cross-folder 54. From the folder 54, one part is directed by a guide 57 to a guide 59 feeding it by means of inclined rollers into a folder 61, and the other part is directed by a guide 58 to bands 6 conveying it across the machine to a guide 60 feeding it by means of inclined rollers into a folder 62, the folders 61, 62 delivering the sheets to bands 65, 66 respectively. It is stated that folders other than buckling folders may be employed. Specifications 276,329, [Class 100 (ii), Printing processes &c.]. is referred to.
