Abstract

312,615. Mason, H. L. Feb. 25, 1928. R o t a r y disc valves; piston valves; wedging or jamming.-A reciprocating or rotary sliding valve of the gate or full-way type having at least two moving members is provided with means, in the form of sliding bolts, balls, or similar coupling members, for obtaining a rigid connection between one of the moving members and the valve casing during part of the movement of the primary moving member, and to the primary moving member itself during the other part of its movement. In the example shown in Fig. 9 of a rotary double disc valve, the discs 33<1>, 45 are wedged outwards into close contact with the seatings in the closed position, as shown. In the first part of the opening movement of the spindle 48 the central wedgemember 39 moves relatively to the valve discs and carrier-yokes 37, 37', the latter being secured to the casing by the balls 43, 43<1> which engage recesses in the valve casing. This relative movement releases the wedging action of the member 39 whereupon the balls 43, 43<1> move into recesses in the wedge member 39 and release the carrier yokes from the casing. The carrier-yokes 37, 37<1> valve discs, wedge member 39, and spindle 48 all now move in unison until it is desired to close the valve, whereupon the reverse action of the coupling members and wedge member takes place. A similar arrangement of locking-balls &c. is shown applied to the loose floating follower-member of the piston valve described in Specification 277,075. thus dispensing with springs. According to the Provisional Specification, the above coupling-arrangement is applicable more widely as a means of releasing a member which had been attached to another and attaching it instead to a third.
