Abstract
259,221. Autier, V., and Autier, M. Oct. 1, 1925, [Convention date]. Sluice valves.-A parallel slide sluice valve in which the slides are wedged outwards against their seatings when closed comprises slides 27, 28 and two semi-circular nut members 24, 25 which are formed with spherical surfaces engaging packing members 26 also formed with spherical surfaces bearing against the inner sides of the slides, as shown. The two nut members 24, 25 are connected by a right and left handed screw 23 attached to a spindle sleeve 11 so as to rotate therewith. In the normal sliding adjustment of the valve, by rotation of the hand wheel 14 and screw 13, the sleeve reciprocates only, being held from rotation by a collar 17 thereon, having grooves engaging the guide pillars 21, 22, in conjunction with a disc 15 fixedly secured to the sleeve and frictionally held to the collar 17 by spring-pressed balls 20 engaging depressions therein. As the valve discs approach their closed position a cone 29 on the screwed spindle wedges against the bottom of the nut member, as shown, whereupon the sleeve 11 and double screw 23 are rotated, the ball friction clutch slipping. This action draws together the nut members 24, 25 thereby forcing the packings 26 against the slides 27, 28 and forcing these against their seatings. A reverse action takes place during the opening movement of the valve.
