Abstract

311,851. Robinson, E. Y., and Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd. Feb. 28, 1928. Vacuum tubes.-In order to prevent the secondary emission of electrons, an electrode, other than a thermionic cathode, is formed of carbon alone or of carbon reinforced with metal; a grid may consist of solid carbon and a grid or anode of carbonized cellulose material. In one method of preparation, a cellulose base is converted to carbon by heating in a vacuum or in an inert or reducing atmosphere, the electrode being shaped while in the cellulose condition; or the electrode may be formed of metal sheet or gauze coated with a suspension, paste, or solution of cellulose such as a solution of cotton in zinc chloride, or cellulose acetate solution, and heated in an inert or reducing gas or in a vacuum to carbonize the coating. Materials suggested as suitable for carbonizing are paper, Bristol board, cloth, papier mÔchÚ, wood or paper pulp, and muslin. A grid may be formed by lashing the turns of a carbon helix to a metal support which may be grooved as described in Specification 231,225; or the helix may be secured to a straight or V- shaped support by one or more clips. The grid shown consists of a helix 7 mounted on grooved supports 8 spaced by transverse wires 11. Metal strips 13 may be welded to the outer sides of the supports. An anode may be formed by two dished plates prepared as described above and secured together by rivets. They may be fastened to supports by rivets or clips; or a tubular anode may be clipped to a support. Specifications 24850/04, 13518/08. 238,218 and 271,466 also are referred to.
