Abstract

311,609. Chapman, C. H., and Salter, W. J. Aug. 3, 1928. Hand tools for destroying weeds, depositing manure, &c. -A hand appliance for distributing weed - killing powders, fertilizers, &c. is provided with a discharge valve operated by a, relative longitudinal movement of the parts of the appliance and consisting of slotted telescoping tubes. The valve is applied to the lower end of a container a. provided with a handle b and filling orifice b<1>. The valve consists of an outer tuba c slotted at c<1>, and an inner tube d slotted at d<1>, the inner tube normally being pressed outwards by a spring e. The inner tube d is open at the end to form a discharge outlet and is provided with a cupshaped extension f to prevent its being pressed into the ground and to limit the area, covered by the powder. The valve is opened by pressing down the container until the slots in the two tubes c, d, register. The relative movement of the tubes may be regulated by means of a stop nut g. A pin on the tubed d engages a slot in the tube c to prevent withdrawal. In a modification the valve may be actuated also by a rod extending from the tube d through the container a to a sliding handle between the supports of the main handle b.
