Sand, distributing on w h e e l tracks ; railcleaners.-Sand is distributed in front of the wheels of a locomotive or locomotive vehicle by providing an artificial sand-stone from which the sand is scraped off by pressing it into contact with the rail, or with the wheels, or with an independent rotating wheel or scraper. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the block 1 of sandstone, which is preferably made from quartz sand bonded with cement is mounted in a holder 2 within a housing 10 and is under the influence of coiled springs 6. 7 which, through the medium of rotary shafts. 12, 13, toothed wheels 4 and a double rack bar 3, tend to press the block downwardly into contact with the rail. A double-armed lever 9 formed at one end as a pawl engaging a ratchet wheel 15 normally holds the block in a position above the rail, but is released, so as to allow the springs 6, 7 to function, when an energized electromagnet 8 attracts a bolt 17 adapted to strike a pin 16 at the opposite end of the lever 9. An auxiliary spring 20 acting on the ends of levers 22, 21 on the shafts 6, 7 serves to keep the total spring pressure on the block 1 substantially uniform as it wears away. The block also acts to remove any oil or grease from the rail. Modifications are described in which the blocks 1 make contact with the locomotive wheels, or with scraper wheels rotated by contact with the rail. Two sets of blocks, of relatively hard and relatively soft sand-stone respectively, may be provided, and adapted to be utilized either separately or simultaneously.
