Proofing against bacteria.-A method of preserving wood by impregnation consists in first injecting an aqueous solution of arsenic sulphide in ammonium hydrosulphide and then impregnating with a composition of which the antiseptic constituent is insoluble in water, such as arsenic, sulphur, or a compound thereof. The composition may be such as described in Specification 310,804. The aqueous solution first injected may also contain a soluble acetate, or an alkali sulphide, and a phenol compound may be added. The arsenic sulphide may be produced in the solution by reaction of arsenious oxide with an alkali sulphide. A small quantity of ammonia, soap, or alkali resinate may be added to the solution. The first solution facilitates the penetration of the second composition. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) it is stated that the aqueous solution preferably contains an acetate of iron, copper or mercury, or an acetate and an alkaline salt, or a solution of arsenic sulphide in ammonium sulphide. Phenol compounds, an alkali naphthalene sulphonate, alkali phthalimide-sulphonate, or an alkali fluosilicate or sulphate, may also be added. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
