Abstract

Vacuum tubes; lowpressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-In incandescent - cathode discharge lamps for the emission of ultra-violet or other rays, screens are arranged to prevent the deposition of disintegrated cathode material on that part of the tube wall intended for the transmission of rays. In the device shown in Fig. 1 a screen 5 above the cathode 4 protects the wall 1, and in the device shown in Fig. 2, which is provided with an inner tube 12 for the circulation of a liquid to be sterilized, a cylindrical screen 22 around the cathode 19 protects the end of the tube 12. The screens may be connected to leading-in wires to enable them to be used as auxiliary starting-electrodes. The filling may consist of argon and mercury vapour.
