Abstract
308,475. Quasi-Arc Co., Ltd., and Strohmenger, A. P. March 27, 1928. Uniting by fusion.-The steel core of an arcwelding electrode contains such a percentage of manganese that the metal deposited therefrom contains approximately 0.45 per cent of manganese, which is a critical percentage, so as to obtain a joint more resistant to corrosion or to mechanical stresses either at normal temperatures or at higher temperatures about 900 C. such as are used in forging, bending or otherwise deforming the metal. The amount of manganese in the core required, due to losses in the arc, to obtain this result varies from 2 per cent to 4 per cent according to the diameter of the core, the amount varying inversely as the diameter thereof. The maximum percentage of silicon which can be used to reduce the loss of manganese in the arc is from 0.35 to 0.4 per cent, but such an amount is only used when the manganese content is near the limit for a metal which can be drawn into wire, i.e. from 3.5 to 4 per cent. Preferably from 0.2 to 0.25 per cent of silicon is used. For an electrode of gauge No. 10, the cross section of which is 0.013 sq. in., the core may consist of 96.52 parts of iron, 0.09 of carbon, 3.12 of manganese, 0.23 of silicon, 0.03 of sulphur and 0.01 of phosphorus. The core may also contain small percentages of metals such as tungsten, molybdenum and chromium. The core is preferably used with a flux consisting of blue asbestos yarn with an added wire or strip of aluminium as described in Specification 13538/14.
