Sheathed arc welding electrodes with fluxes which, among other things, contain clay and manganese dioxide in addition to a binder, are known. % With such electrodes, welds with high strength can be achieved. If, at the same time, high demands are placed on the welds in terms of toughness, for example when welding pressure vessels, the manganese dioxide content must be increased significantly. The invention therefore relates to a covered arc welding electrode for welds with particular strength and toughness, the covering of which contains clay and manganese dioxide, and consists in that the covering consists of 25 to 600/0 acid clay and 75 to 400/0 manganese dioxide. These two single components of the casing are made into a paste in a known manner with a binding agent, for example soda waterglass, to the consistency required in each case.
The bare welding wire is applied before the ■ _ Flux is applied, expediently wrapped with a cellulosic material or bobbin lace. The flux can then be sprayed on in a known manner. For For the welding wire, it is expedient to use a steel with the following composition: Carbon 0.06 to 05130/0, manganese 0.3 to 0.60 / 0, silicon, sulfur; phosphorus not more than 0.040 / 0 each, remainder iron.
With a welding electrode encased in this way, tight welds are achieved which have a strength of 47.2 kg, mm 2 with an elongation at break (δ 4 ) of 300/0 and a constriction of 54%. The electrodes described are particularly suitable for welding on pressure vessels, steam boilers, coiled pipes for pressure heating, ie for all welds for which special requirements are made with regard to elongation.
It is expedient to weld with direct current with connection of the electrode to the positive pole of the power source while maintaining a short arc. The welding currents are between 45 and 220 amps with welding wire diameters of 2.0 to 5.9 mm. When welding two sheets of 3.175 mm (Y 8 inches) z. B. an electrode with a welding wire diameter of 3.25 mm at a current of 70 Amp. For ι m welding you need about 7.6 minutes and 1500 mm electrode.
