Abstract

308,362. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Miles, G. W.). March 22, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Pigments. - Pearl essence is extracted fromfish scales by treating them with a liquid containing an enzyme. Preferably a proteolyticenzyme such as pepsin or pancreatin in the presence of an activator such as acid or alkali, is used. In an example, 10 lbs. of herring scale is agitated with 10 gallons of water containing 30 grams of pepsin and 0.3-5 per cent of hydrochloric acid. The fish scale is separated from the detached pearl essence by sieving, and the suspension of pearl essence allowed to settle. It is then washed by decantation, preferably in the presence of a preservative such as sodium benzoate or other benzoic acid or salicylic acid salts, and at low or atmospheric temperature. Pepsin may be replaced by panoreatin in alkaline solution,
