Heel seats, shaping by cutting.-The heel end of a shoe sole is bevelled to form a heel seat by a pair of bevelling cutters arranged for movement from the heel end to the breast line. of the sole, and in paths inclined to its longitudinal median line. The machine produces a sole having a heel seat extending across the full width of the sole at the breast line. A foot 51 is mounted at the end of a post 50 guided in adjustable bearings 52, 64 and provided with a spring plunger 55 at its lower end. Engaging the spring plunger is a lever 56 linked to a treadle rod 58 also linked to levers 85, 84 operating a presser plate 74. The shaft 75 of the presser foot engages a spring-held block 77 to allow cant of the shaft. A crease plate 45 supports the rear end of the sole, the shoe being positioned against an abutment 46 carried by an arm provided with a pointer 47 cooperating with a scale indicating the correct position of the shoe. When the work is properly positioned, the treadle 58 is depressed, raising the foot 51 and depressing the foot 74 to clamp the work. The post 50 is held in raised position by a pinching cam operated by a spring 69, the cam being journaled in the lower bearing 64. A handle 27 actuates a one-revolution clutch on a shaft carrying a cam 30 actuating upper and lower rolls 41 on levers linked to slides 14, 15. These slides carry bevelling knives 16, 17 and move in inclined paths adjustable by screws 21, 22 co-operating with springs 19, 20. The knives advance in turn to make the bevelling cut, and the cam shaft comes to rest. The shouldering cut is then made by knives substantially as described in Specification 274,543. The treadle 58 is then released, a stop 70 thereon engages a lever 68 releasing the post 50, which falls. Simultaneously the foot 74 is raised by a spring, and the work may be removed.
