Abstract

Moulds; clamping moulds. - Articles for example rails, to be welded by the thermoaluminic process have the ends s<1>, s" to be joined separated by a space that is covered with strip iron a, gates a', Fig. 2, being provided for the inflow of metal. The strip is surrounded and kept in place by refractory material such as asbestos or fireclay e contained in a sectional U- shaped casing b, c, d held together by a screw clamp (not shown) and by wedges v<1>. The pouring block contains a central ridge f<1> to distribute the metal to the channels f<11> from which it flows directly over the rail ends. In a modification the strip metal a is replaced by sectional U-shaped members a<2>, a<3>, a<4>, Fig. 3 so that a reinforcing bead is cast round the joint. The sections are connected by a cap at q, by a ring at t, and by a wire w, and are surrounded by plastic material contained in a sectional casing held together by rings h<1>, h<2>, h<3>. Preheating of the mould as by supplying hot gases by a blower may take place through the ring t the opening being afterwards closed by a plug p. The mould first described may also be preheated. A lateral recess m on the pouring block delivers metal on either side of the ridge f<1>.
