To all whom it' may concern.'
Be it known that T, HENRY F. A, KLEIN- soHMiDT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds or Forms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in molds or forms which are especially intended for use in electrically uniting the abutting ends of the rails of railways, and it has for its principal object the provision of an improved mold, that, due to its novel construction, will permit of a substantially uni form heating of the abutting ends of the track rails.
As is well known to those skilled in the art to which this invention pertains, the track rails are of irregular cross-section. That is to say, the vertical web, the head and the base of eachrail, are of different cross-sectional areas, and in heating the adjacent ends of the rails so that theymay be united to afford a continuous rail with perfect and permarient electric conductivity, the parts having the smaller area will be more quickly heated to the required degree of temperature for welding or unition by the action of the electric current and flux employed in the process, than those parts or portions of the rails having larger areas. Thus it will be seen and understood, that if the pieces to be united are of irregular shape in cross-section, the heating thereof to the required de gree of temperature for their union into one continuous piece will not be uniform. That is' to say, the thinner portions will be overheated while the thicker portions are being raised to the proper degree of temperature.-
To overcome this difficulty l have provided means for distributing the flux between the ends of the pieces or rails in accordance with their cross-sectional area, and since the flux acts as a resistance for the electric current used as a heating element,
the heating power of the electric current will be proportioned and controlled by the amount of flux at a given point. Therefore, the ends of the rails may be uniformly heated.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation' of my mold or form applied to two railway rails.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numerals 2 and 3 designate the metal pieces or rails to be joined which are located in alinement with one another, yet are slightly separated at their adjacent ends for the reception and retention of a suitable flux while in a molten or fused state, which flux is employed in the process of uniting the metal pieces, and coacts with the electric current used for heating the pieces or rails, so that by reason of the resistance of the flux, the ends of the pieces or rails 2 and 3 will become heated to a suitable degree, when said pieces may be moved into intimate contact with one another, or otherwise united together. Located on and against the lower surface of the base 4: of each of the pieces or rails 2 and 3 and extending transversely thereof, as
well as on eac-h side of the space between said bases, is the base plate 5 of the mold, which base plate is provided in its upper surface with a depression or slot 6 which extends slightly under the free end of, and slightly outwardly from each side of the bases 4, thus permitting the molten flux, when it is flowed between the ends of the pieces 2 and 3, to pass slightly under the bases of the rails and to each side thereof.
Mounted on the upper surface of the base plate 5 of the mold are the respective side blocks 7 and 8, which have their inner surfaces 9 shaped to correspond to the side of the metal pieces or rails being joined so as to contact closely therewith.
The blocks 7 and 8 are each provided with a vertical slot l0 adapted to be alined with the space between the pieces or rails 2 and 3 and being of greater or less width than said space as shown. However, it will be understood that the slots l0 may be of the same width as the space between the rails or of less width and flared outwardly adjlacent the space between the rails if desired.

It will now be clear to those skilled in the art that with the slots 1() following the contour of the side walls of the pieces being joined, the flux body will be distributed ac-A cording to the cross sectional area of theV pieces.
A cap or top piece 12 is arranged on the top of the side blocks' 7 and 8 and 1s provided with suitable depending lugs 13 adapted to fit into suitable 'recesses in the side blocks to'center and secure it in place.
The cap or top 12 is provided with a centrally arranged lslot 11i and adapted to aline with the slots 1l() in the side blocks 7 and 8 and having its side walls flaring outwardly to provide a pouring mouth or box to facilitate the pouring of the flux into the slots 10 and' 6' of the side blocks and base plate, respectively, and between the ends of the pieces or rails to be joined.
It will 1be understood that molds -of this class are preferably made from refractory 5 material due tothe intense heat developed during their use.

A mold adapted to surround two spaced apart pieces at their approximate ends,` comprising a base plate, side blocks, and a top member, said side blocks and said top member having vertically disposed transverse, alin'ed lslots therein communicating with the space between said pieces, said slots in said side block having their back walls shaped to the vapproximate contour of the side walls of said pieces and spaced therefrom.
3. A mold adapted to surround two spaced apart pieces at their approximate ends, comprising a base plate, side blocks, and a top member, said side blocks and said top member having vertically disposed transverse, alined slots therein communicating with the space between said pieces, said slots in said side block having their baclr walls shaped to the approximate contour of the side walls of said pieces and spaced therefrom, and said slot in said top memberv having outwardly fiaring side walls forming a pouring mouth to facilitate the pouring of flux into said slots.
4. mold adapted to surround two spaced apart rails at their approximate ends comprising a base plate, side blocks, and a top member, said side blocks having vertically disposed slots therein alined with andin communication with the space between said rails, said slots having their back walls shaped to the contour of the side walls of said rails and spaced therefrom. y
