Abstract
305,379. Morris, C. Feb. 15, 1928. Chemicals; extincteurs. -An extinguisher of the kind in which an extinguishing liquid is ejected by carbon-dioxide generated by the action of a liquid on a dry powder, comprises an outer container A, Fig. 8, charged, for example, with carbon tetrachloride to which salt has been added to prevent freezing, and an inner container consisting of two separable chambers C, D divided by a valve e on a spindle E. In the chamber D is the powder, for example sodium bicarbonate and tartaric acid of ammonium carbonate and oxalic acid, in a cylindrical annular wire gauge container d. The chamber C is filled with water. In use, the valve e is opened, the water dissolves the powder, and the carbon-dioxide generated passes to the container A by a pipe C<1> provided with a gauge cap c<1>, expelling the extinguishing liquid by a pipe. A filling plug B<1> for the chamber C is formed with passages serving to vent the apparatus when the plug is partly unscrewed. The valve e may be replaced by a puncturable diaphragm. In a modification, Fig. 2, the powder in a gauze container d is suspended from the cover of the extinguisher, and generates carbon-dioxide when acted upon by the extinguishing liquid upon inversion of the extinguisher. In a modification of this form, the powder is enclosed in a container of solid metal with port-holes to permit access of liquid to the powder. In another modification, the powder is enclosed in an imperforate container which is immersed in the extinguishing liquid and has an opening closed by a valve, the opening of which allows access of liquid to the powder. In another modification, the powder container is so constructed that the powder can be ejected on to the liquid. The Provisional Specification also describes a construction in which the powder is in a glass or like vessel adapted to be fractured by a plunger.
