Abstract

304,374. Ruzicka, C. Oct. 21, 1927. Apparatus for making films.-A machine for making transparent films from viscose or cellulose dissolved in cupramonium solutions comprises a trough b, Fig. 1, fitted with a perforated bottom, so that the cellulose solution contained in the trough can be distributed on the surface of a drum a adapted to be heated or cooled and rotated in a receptacle c containing a suitable coagulating medium; a transfer roller d over which the partially coagulated film x passes on leaving the coagulating bath; a pair of perforated pipes e for the purpose of spraying the film with coagulating solution on both sides; a series of horizontal transport rollers f mounted revolve within or without a receptacle g, in which the spent coagulating solution collects; additional rollers f<1>, if required, for the purpose of prolonging the path of the film; a second transfer roller d<1>; a pair of spray pipes h supplied with water or washing or neutralizing solution, which is collected in a tank k, and a second series of transport rollers i, fitted, if required, with additional rollers i<1>, over which the washed and drained film x passes before being transferred to a third roller d<2>, from which it passes over the under surface of a heated drum l and is removed by a roller m and reeled in convenient manner. In the modified machine Fig. 3, the partially coagulated film x passes alternately over and under a plurality of rollers n and n<1> and is sprayed on both its sides firstly with coagulating solution from pipes e and then with water from pipes h, whilst in the machine Fig. 5, a larger number of rollers is shown and the film x finally passes under end rollers n<2> unprovided with spraying pipes to a series of drying drums l<1>. All the rollers may be driven or some may be idle rollers and any number of rollers and spraying devices may be used, whilst the transfer rollers d may, if necessary, be resiliently mounted.
