Abstract

304,343. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Oct. 17, 1927. Carbonizing processes. - In the production of hydrocarbons of low boiling point by the low temperature carbonization of materials containing bitumen in the presence of scavenging gases, the gases and vapours are maintained at a higher rate of flow in the reaction space than they would have by being merely passed through the reaction chamber. The increased flow is obtained either by setting up a pulsating or oscillating movement or the gases in the reaction space or by repeatedly circulating the gases in the reaction chamber through the reaction space. Gases, e.g. hydrogen, are circulated by a pump a through a reaction chamber h containing a catalyst, a condenser d and a stripping vessel e. A piston g is reciprocated in the chamber k and imparts an oscillatory movement to the gases and vapours. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, a valveless piston g having a higher effectiveness than the pump i is reciprocated in a reaction space b bounded by a cylindrical mantel c, and thus a circulation of the gases between the reaction space b and the annular space k formed between the mantel c and the walls of the vessel k is obtained.
