Abstract
304,137. Preis, G. Jan. 12, 1928, [Convention date]. Gear-cutting. - Spur or bevel gears are provided with teeth which are curved or angulated in planes passing through the gear axis. For cutting the gear 1, Fig. 1, a disc cutter 8 is oscillated about a point 3 lying in the median plane of the gear so that cutting points 9 describe arcuate paths 10. The profiles are generated by progressively rotating the cutters about its axis 13 while the gear blank is rotated in unison. For cutting the corresponding mating gear, Fig. 2, a rack cutter 16 is oscillated about a point 17 lying within the gear blank, the blank being indexed between successive cutting movements and the profiles generated by rolling movement between the gear and rack cutter. An angulated form of tooth may also be cut by means of a rack cutter which reciprocates longitudinally of the blank while either the cutter or blank is simultaneously given a transverse reciprocating movement. A bevel gear may be cut by means of a rotary cutter 33, Fig. 4, having its axis 35 at the centre of curvature of the desired tooth space. The corresponding convex wheel is cut by a single-tooth cutter 37 oscillating about a centre 39. Other forms of cutter, such as multiple-disc milling-cutters may be employed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 104,515, 119,865, 211,531, and 240,185.
