Abstract
303,904. Pilblad, E. J. Jan. 12, 1928, [Convention date]. Vibration-dampers for vehicles comprise an oscillating friction element or brake shoe which is expanded into contact with a brake drum when the axle moves away from its normal position, the friction being dependent upon the extent of the displacement. The drum 5, Figs. 3 and 4, is secured by bolts 4 to the vehicle frame and the operating-arm 14, which moves with the axle, is connected to and oscillates a spider with legs 8 to which the friction element 6 is secured. The spider carries the pivot 28 of a lever 27, the lower end of which engages between the ends 26 of two levers 22 pivoted to the wall of the drum 5 at the point 23. The upper ends of the levers 22 are drawn together by a spring 25 and rotation of the arm 14 and spider tends to tilt the lever 27 which bears against and may move one of the levers 22. When the lever 27 tilts, it engages one of the levers 30 also mounted on the pivot 28 and forces the roller 32 on said lever 30 into engagement with one of the free ends of the friction element with a force which depends upon the displacement of the axle from its normal position. The rollers may be adjusted relatively to their levers 30 by screw mechanism to take'up wear of the brake member. The braking effect may be altered by changing the spring 25 or by using a pin 24, against which the levers 22 bear, of different diameter.
