Abstract
294,720. Clark, D'A. M., (Bendix Brake Co.). May 9, 1927. Blocks and shoes acting on drums; actuated or applied by running axle or wheel.-A brake comprises a pair or more of articulated floating shoes having limited circumferential movement in either direction of rotation of the brake drum and a servo-shoe disposed between the free ends of the shoes and connected through powermultiplying means to apply the main shoes to the drum. The brake shown comprises a pair of floating shoes 24, 26 hinged together and provided with slots 28 through which pass anchoring pins 30, 32. The shoes are held in the disengaged position by springs 40, 36, an adjustable eccentric stop 38 being provided adjacent the pivot. The shoes are confined laterally by plates 42 secured to the fixed backing-plate. A floating servo-shoe 50 disposed between the ends of the shoes 24, 26 is adapted to be forced against the drum by a segmental roller 58 disposed between the shoe and an eccentric pin 56 on a rock shaft 18 operable by the main pedal or equivalent. The shoe 50 normally rests upon a roller 52 at one end under the influence of a spring 54 connected to an arm on shaft 18 and it engages at the other end a floating lever 62 carrying two rollers 64, 66 disposed in semi-cylindrical recesses in the ends of a pair of thrust members 68, 70 pivotally connected at 72, 74 to the ends of the shoes 24, 26. The idle position of the lever 62 and members 68, 70 is determined by a hook on the member 68 embracing a pin 76 on the backing-plate. Thus when the servo-shoe 50 is applied to the drum by rocking the shaft 18 its movement in one direction or the other according to the direction of rotation of the drum forces the thrust members 68, 70 apart so effecting the engagement of the shoes 24, 26 with the drum, these shoes then anchoring at one or other of the pins 30, 32 so that one shoe applies force to the other. The brake is shown applied to a vehicle steering wheel, the shaft 18 being provided with a crank arm engaged by a horizontal lever pivoted on the fixed axle.
