Cellulose solutions, processes for making filaments from; apparatus for making filaments.-In order to effect a drawing-out of the filaments of artificial silk &c. during their passage through the coagulation bath, the spinning operation is conducted in a bath containing such a high conceutration of the coagulating-agent as will produce a plasticising effect on the coagulated filaments, and at a speed substantially in excess of 60 metres per minute, so that the friction between the filaments and the bath will cause an elongation of the plastic filaments. In sulphuric acid coagulation baths, concentrations of approximately 50 per cent or higher produce satisfactory plasticizing of the filaments. The spinning speed depends to some extent on the composition, specific gravity, temperature &c. of the coagulation bath. In order to localize movements of the bath, it is advantageous to spin in narrow channels. In an example, a, viscose solution is spun through normal apertures into sulphuric acid of 50 per cent or more, and at a spinning speed of 125 metres per minute; filaments of 0.5 denier are obtained. Specification 274,521 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the high relative speed necessary to produce the frictional drag on the filaments may be obtained by the movement of the bath.
