Abstract

303,065. Einstein, A., and Szilard, L. Dec. 27, 1927, [Convention date]. Electromagnetic apparatus.-Apparatus for forcing fluid metals, such as mercury, comprises an iron core 2 in an iron cylinder 1 under the influence of the magnetic fields produced by electric coils 4 - - 7 surrounding the cylinder. The mercury flows through the annular space 3 between the core and cylinder, and an electric current is induced in it by the magnetic fields. The currents in the adjacent coils are about 90‹ out of phases with each other, and the pairs of coils 4, 6 and 5, 7 may be in series. Laminated metal sheets 8, 9 are arranged round the cylinder. The apparatus may be used in a refrigerating system shown in Fig. 2, and comprising an injector 12 through which the mercury is forced by the apparatus 10, drawing a vapour from a pipe 13 and forcing it through a pipe 14 into a chamber 15, when the mercury returns by a pipe 16 to the apparatus 10, while the vapour flows through a condenser 17 and throttle 20 to the vaporizer 18. The mercury may draw in water to compress the vapour. The apparatus may be used for forcing molten metal to a mould.
