Abstract
302,957. Andrews, J. D. F. Sept. 21, 1927. Turnstiles.-In order to prevent more than one person from entering, by a single payment, a lavatory or other place provided with a coinfreed door fastening, a pair of doors B1, B2, Fig. 2, fixed to each other at a wide angle, or hinged together and connected by a chain, is hinged at their junction C to the door post or within the lavatory, projections 3A, 3B being provided on the outer door and the lavatory wall respectively to contract the entrance and prevent the passage of a thin person when the doors are half open, and the movement of the double doors being controlled by a coin-freed device D. Inward movement of the door B1 to allow entry into the lavatory is prevented, until after prepayment, by a pawl L, Figs. 2 and 3, engaging a ratchet bar J slidable in guides N on the door and connected by a pivoted bar M to the lavatory wall. The pawl L is raised by a rod T sliding in guides U, the rod being held in its raised position by a pivoted catch W engaging the upper guide U. When the door B1 is fully opened the catch W meets an abutment X and is released, allowing the rod T to drop and the pawl L to re-engages the ratchet teeth K. In this position the door B2 closes the entrance and is locked by a sliding bolt. When the person leaves, the pawl L prevents the door B1 being again opened without a second payment. Instead of a sliding ratchet bar J, a fixed toothed quadrant at the top of the door engaged by a reversible pawl, may be used. A cam instead of a pawl may be used with a plain bar or quadrant. Coin action, mechanical-connection.-A coin Y, Fig. 5, inserted through a slot P drops through a tube O to a pivoted piece S. When the piece S is turned about its pivot R, the coin raises the rod T and is discharged when the piece S returns to normal position.
