To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, SAMUEL A. LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in BlindFasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to blind-fasteners; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character adapted not only to secure a blind or shutter in its closed position, but to prevent the same be ing unhinged by high winds or otherwise when shut, the same consisting of a very few parts capable of manufacture at a low cost.

The invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a blind and its casing provided with a fastener constructed in accordance with my in vention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in the line 2 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 isasectional front elevation of the fastener and a part of the sill of the casing.

In the drawings I have shown parts of a window-casing and ablind hinged-thereto, the same being denoted, respectively, byA and B.

The fastener includes in its construction a latch and a keeper, and while it is not essential how they should be arranged I prefer to attach the keeper to the window-casing.

The carrier for the latch is denoted by O, and it is shown as including a horizontal body or plate, as 5, fastened by screws or other suitable means to the under side of the lower stile of the blind B and extending longitudinally of the same. Said body has the perpendioular flanges 6 and 7, between which a latch, as 8, is pivoted, as at 9. I find that I can make the latch-carrier very inexpensively by casting.

The latch 8 is of the gravity type, it being adapted, when the blind to which the same is connected is shut, to fall behind a catch or shoulder, as 10, upon a keeper D, in which position it is shown in the several views. The latch is pivoted between the parallel flanges 6 and '7, near oneend thereof, while the free end of said latch projects beyond the opposite end of said flanges and has a curved portion to be engaged by the fingers to lift said latch above the catch 10 and permit the blind B to be opened.

The keeper D has prongs or points, as 13, by which it can be driven into the casing A and is provided forward of the catch or shoulder 10 with an inclined face 14, disposed in the path of the free end of the latch and which is intended to slightly elevate said latch, so that it can fall back of the catch. The depending flanges have alined openings, as 15, shown as circular, through which the body of the keeper D can extend to engage the carrier 0, thereby when the blind is closed holding it down and preventing the same from being forced from its hinges. The flanges 6 and 7 are connected, as at 16, the connection serving to uphold the latch when the blind is open. It is apparent that the keeper D might be placed upon the outside of a building to be engaged by the latch 8 when the shutter is open, and in this case the advantages previously set forth follow.

Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. In a blind-fastener, a body provided with parallel flanges having openings, a latch supported between said flanges, a keeper adapted to project through said openings and to be engaged by the latch and serving to engage the flanges, thereby to hold a shutter on its hinges, and a connection between the flanges to uphold the latch when the blind is open.

2. In a blind-fastener, a body provided with parallel flanges perpendicular thereto, said flanges having alined keeper-receiving openings, a latch pivoted between said flanges and its free end extending beyond the same, and a connection uniting the flanges to uphold the latch.
