Catalytic apparatus.- In a catalytic converter of the Tentelew type, at least a part of the reaction mixture is caused to flow substantially parallel to the catalvst tubes and in indirect heat exchanging relation thereto, and then in the reverse direction and in intimate contact with the catalyst tubes, which are finally traversed after a second reversal of direction. In the illustrated apparatus tubes 31 are placed over the catalyst tubes 12, the gas flows downwardly around the tubes 31, enters them through perforations in their lower portion, and flows up them to enter the catalyst tubes. Passages 36 connect the tubes 31 to a second gas inlet 25 by which a part of the gas may be directly admitted to the catalyst, and the distribution of this gas among the tubes is controlled by orifice plugs 38. After leaving the main body of catalyst the gas mav pass through one or more further layers 33 which are not cooled. In a modification, the apparatus is inverted.
