Abstract

Methyl, ethyl, and higher alcohols; aldehydes; ketones; organic ac c i d s ; amines.-In the production of methyl, ethyl and higher alcohols and other oxygenated organic compounds by the catalytic interaction of oxides of carbon and hydrogen, the reaction gases are preheated by the hot reaction products in the same apparatus that contains the catalytic chamber. The apparatus, which is described in Specification 193,789, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], comprises a pressure tube 1 and a tube 2 containing an electric heater, between which two tubular partitions 3. 4 are placed, the space between 2, 3 being filled with catalytic material. The gases entering by passages 11, 12 pass into the space 9 between the tubes 1, 4 and thence through the passage 13 into the space 6 in which any deficit of heat is made up from the electric heater; after flowing through the catalytic material they traverse the space 8 between tubes 3, 4 where they surrender their heat to the ingoing gases flowing in the adjacent space 9 and are then discharged through passages 14, 15. An additional tube 5 may be provided between tubes 1, 4 thus making an additional space 10 between the tubes 1, 5; the entering gases then either flow through both spaces 9, 10 which are connected by holes at the top of tube 5, or the gases enter by the pipe 16 and pass downward through the space 10 and upward through the space 9. The surfaces of the tubes 2, 4 may be ribbed to facilitate heat interchange, and tube 3 may be constructed of material of low thermal conductivity. Openings 18, 19 are provided for the introduction and withdrawal of the catalyst. After separation of the products from the issuing gases by cooling, the unreacted gases may again be passed through the apparatus. Preferably the gases are continuously circulated in a circuit containing also a condenser and a circulator, together if necessary with a gas purifier, oil separator, etc.; fresh gas miture is continually introduced in quantity corresponding to the separated compounds. By variation of the working conditions products are obtainable which contain not only alcohols, but also aldehydes, ketones, and organic acids, while amines are produced if some nitrogen be present. The products may be used as a fuel, solvents, or as denaturants for alcohol.
