Abstract

301,150. Postnikoff, A. A., and Pickersgill, W. R. A. Sept. 23, 1927. Sand, distributing on wheel tracks.-In automatic sanding-apparatus in which sand is automatically distributed beneath the road wheels of a motor vehicle when the manually-operated brakes are applied, the hand or foot lever of the brake mechanism is adapted to operate a valve controlling the supply of pressure-fluid to an ejector nozzle or nozzles arranged to discharge sand from its receptacle to the distributing nozzle or nozzles. The sand may be sprayed by means of compressed-air supplied by a pump b, Fig. 1, driven from the engine, or from the wheels, or by means of exhaust gases, a storage reservoir a, a pressure-control valve, and a hand valve e for closing the exit from the reservoir, when required, being preferably employed. In one form the sand receptacles are formed in one with the mud-guards and the running-board, and sand is drawn therefrom by an air ejector and passes through pipes o having upwardly-bent portions to the front of the wheels, the pipes being branched if one ejector supplies two or morewheels. The admission of. air or exhaust gases to the sand-spraying apparatus is controlled by a valve v operated by the brake lever h acting through a lever q on the valve spindle in opposition to a spring w, the lever q being pivoted to an adjustable screw stud t at its free end. The sand-spraying device may be fixed to the bottom. or to the side of each sand receptacle or to the running-board, or may be embodied in the bottom of the receptacle, so that sand falls into the device by gravity. The sand-spraying devices may be provided with two or more nozzles n disposed parallel to one another and pointing in the same or opposite directions. When using exhaust gases, the exhaust pipe may be provided with a choke -valve actuated simultaneously with the valve f so as to raise the pressure therein. Independent means may be provided to maintain the valve f in the open position.
