Grates.-A, grate for gas generators and other combustion apparatus comprises a number of radially disposed rotatable sections 28 mounted on inclined shafts and a central poker 57 through which air and steam are supplied adapted to be reciprocated for stirring the fuel bed. The rotatable sections 28 comprise polygonal dished plates 30, Fig. 2. mounted on a rectangular shaft 29, the plates being of decreasing size towards the centre of the producer. The inner ends of the sections are supported rotatably in bearings in an annular casting 19 while their outer ends are provided with bearing members 34 supported by castings 16 having bearings 17, 18 for shafts 36. The ends 37 of the latter are in driving engagement with rectangular openings 38 in the bearing members 34. The outer ends of the shafts 36 are provided with pawl and ratchet gearing operated by toggle levers in such a manner that adjacent grates sections are rotated in opposite directions. The toggle levers are connected to the piston rods of hydraulic cylinders 52 mounted on the casing of the generator and are actuated thereby. The poker 57 is actuated by the piston of a hydraulic cylinder 59. Slorts 61 are provided for the admission of steam and air to the fuel from the base of the producer which is supplied with air and steam by the pipes 105, 106. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the grate sections 28 consist of conical slotted castings driven by bevel gearing 93, 94 through vertical shafts 95 having clutches 96. The shafts 95 are provided with sprocket wheels 97 driven by a chain 98 passing round the wheels 97 in such manner as to cause the adjacent grate sections to rotate in opposite directions. Reversing gear is provided to rotate the shafts 95 in either direction. A fixed central pier may extend from the grate up into the fuel bed.
