Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patnte'd $1 14 1922 Application filed December 1s, 1e20. Serial at; 43535.
T all whom it may concern; 7 Be it known that I, CHARLES Gaa'rnn, c tizen of the United States of America, res1ding at Fort Worth, in the county. of'Tarrant' and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas Producers. of which the following is a specification. 7 7
My invention relates to apparatus for producing gas and particularly to apparatus" dividual enterprises and which can be used for driving small motors, thus making it possible for a small factory to manufacture gas for its own use. Another ob ect is to provide apparatus in units which canbe increased to make gas for a city or several manufacturing enterprises or machine shops. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in thefollowing description and the invention will be 'morfe" particularly pointed out inthe claims.
Reference is had to* the accompanying drawings'which form a partof this application. i
Fig. 1 is a vertical-section of a gas mann facturing plant. Fig. 2 is adetail plan view of the support for the'rotating chute. Fig.
3 is a plan, view, of the grate cleaning ap'paratus. Fig. 4 illustrates how a number of units may be operated with one system of gearing.
Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out-the objects of this invention, a furnace l is provided and supported on a base 2 which may serve as an ash box. The furnace 1 is provided with a stationary grate 3; Means are provided for feeding coal or lignite to the furnace. A rotatable chute A is centrally positioned in the furnace casing 1 and a gear wheel 5 is made rigid with the chute i. A hopper 6 is mounted on the furnace casing 1. A rotatable valve or stoker 7 is mounted in the lower part of the hopper 6. An opening in the top part of the casing completes the passage from the hopper tothe chute 4. Means are provlded for revolving the stoker 7 and the chute 4s A shaft 8 journaled in suitable hanging bearings 9 carries a bevel gear 10. The shaft witha bevel wheel 28' which is S may be driven by any suitable power. The
gear wheel 10 drives bevel gear 11 which therewith a bevel gear 13 and the gear 13 drives a bevel gear 14' which drives the stoker 'va lve'j 7. A, vertical shaft 15 is prodrives a shaft 12. Theshaft 12'c'arriesfrigid 1 vided with a bevel wheel 16 which meshes j witlrand drives a gear wheel 17 which is rigid with a shaft 18, The shaft 18 carries a bevel wheel 19 rigid therewith, The bevel wheel 19 drives the wheel 15 whiehjis rigid with the'chu'te 4.1 The gear wheel 10 drives the gearwheel 16. The gear wheel?) is sup ported loosely on a circular flange 21' which may be cast on the int-eriorof'the casing 1.
' The grate cleaning apparatus is also operated by the vertical shaft 15. Scrapers 22 are dragged overthe grate 3. The scrapers 22 are provided with lugs28 at each corner and sprocket chains 24 are driven by sprocket wheels 25, 25, 25, and 26., Thesproc'k'et wheel 26has bevel face 'cogs 27 which mesh sprocket wheels drivethe chain'sf24fand so 7 rigid withih f the shaft 15. The wheel 28 'drives the sprocket wheel 26fand 'allthe. o'tlier sprocket wheels-are driven from the wheel 26. The" move thescrapers 22 over the gr'ate3, The
scrapers 22ar'e perforated so that they will not be heated to meltingipoint. The perforations permit air to pass up through the v grate 3 and through the scrapers and prevent the scrapers from becoming too hot.
The scrapers keep the grate clear of ashes so that plenty of air for combustion purposes will pass through the grate. The openings in the casing for the passage of the .chains 24 and scrapers 22 are sufiicientlylarge to permit the inflow of all the air-that is necessary for combustion. The ashes fall down in the ash box 2 and may be removed through the door 29. The gearing is so arranged that the scrapers 22 move very slowly. The chute 1 is rotated constantly and this chute carries fingers 30 which serve as leveling means to prevent the coal from projecting up past the bottom of the chute 4. The rim 21 will support the chute 4 in its normal working position, but the coal lying on the grate 3 will also tend to support the chute 4: and thus lessen the friction on the rim 21. The chute 1 will conduct the coal to the point of com- 7 to the scrubbing means which consists'of two units 32 and 33. Each unit has a series of horizontal baflie plates 34 and 35. The plates 34 have openings in the central parts and the plates 35 'do not extend entirely to the walls of the casing units 32 and 33 so that the gas in passing downwardly in the unit 32 must take a' zig zag course and finally pass out through the'outlet pipe 36 to the unit 33 where the gas takes a similar course upwardly in the unit 33. The gas may be taken from the unit 33. by a service pipe 37 The plates 34; and 35 are supported byframe members 38. The impurities pass down a pipe 39 into the water box 40 and the pipe 40'projects below the surface of the water or liquid in the boX 40. The overflow from the box 40 passes through an opening 411 into the ash box 2 and will moisten the products therein. By the time the gas leaves the two purifying units 32 and 33, it will be ready for use for lighting, lieating, and for power purposes.
W hat I claim, is,
l. A gas producer comprising a receptacle for the combustion of gas producing material, a rotatable chute suspended in said'receptacle for delivering the material 7 to the lower part of said receptacle, stoker 7 chute,
mechanism for feeding material to said chute, and means for actuating said stoker mechanism and simultaneously rotating said 2. A; gas producer comprising a receptacle for the combustion of gas producing material, a rotatable chute suspended in said receptacle for delivering material to the lower part of said receptacle, stoker mechanism for feeding material to said chute, means carried by said chute for spreading the plOducing material, and means for actuating said stoker mechanism and simultaneously rotating said chute.
for causing the passage of air to said receptacle.
4:. A gas producer comprising a receptacle for the combustion of gas making material, a rotatable chute suspended in said receptacle for delivering the material to the lower part of said receptacle, means for feeding the material to said chute, a grate for said receptacle, scrapers for cleaning said grate and for opening passage ways for air to said receptacle, and means for moving said scrapers slowly across said grate. 1
5. In a furnace for the combustion of'gas making material provided with an ash box and provided with an. outlet for the prodnets of combustion, a rotatable chute suspended in said furnace, stoker mechanism for feeding the material to said chute, a grate and perforated scrapers for cleaning said grate and for providingpassage ways for air to said furnace, gearing for moving said scrape-rs, and means for simultaneously actuating said stoker mechanism, re tating said chute and for dr ving said gear- 6. In a furnace for the combustion of making material provided with a grate, perforated scrapers for cleaning said grate and for providing passage ways for air to said furnace, and gearing for slowly but constantly moving said scrapers across said grate. v
In testimony whereof, I set my hand, this 14th day of December, 1920.
