Abstract
300,518. Robinson, P. G., Foweraker, T. S., Beasley, H. H., Sargent, T., and Strachan & Henshaw, Ltd. June 11, 1927. Transferring designs; printing on rollers.- Apparatus for transferring designs from an original to a printing-surface mounted on a cylindrical support comprises a transfer element mounted on a frame so as to be movable alternately into engagement with the original and with the printing-surface and adapted to receive and transfer the impressions by direct frictional rolling contact with the original and printing-surface respectively. In one form, Fig. 3, the original 12 is mounted on the upper portion 72 of a carriage 22 which can be reciprocated on guides 21 on a bed 20 by an endless chain 23 and hand-wheel 25. The inward movement of the carriage is limited by projections upon it engaging adjustable and removable stops secured on the bed 20. Horizontal and vertical adjustment of the original may be effected by screws 76 and angular adjustment into two positions at right angles to one another is provided for by mounting the part 72 on a vertical pivot and providing it with stops co-operating with a stop on the lower portion 22. A gauge is provided for initially positioning the original comprising a sheet of glass bearing crossed hairlines and having ball-ended plugs engaging sockets in the part 72. The cylinder 14 to which the design is to be transferred is mounted in frames 37 slidable on guides 15 and operated by a hand or power actuated screw 16 working in a nut which may be turned by a worm gear and hand-wheel 17 for fine adjustment of the travel. This adjustment is facilitated by a cursor 40 on one of the frames 37 moving over a scale 41 on the fixed frame of the machine. The cylinder 14 is rotatable by a hand-wheel 18 geared to the cylinder shaft and the initial position of the cylinder is determined by the engagement of one of a series of adjustable stops 38 on the cylinder head 39 with a pivoted catch 36 on the frame 37. The transfer member 13 is rotatable on a shaft 28 carried by a pair of levers 26 pivoted on the machine frame 27 and connected by links 53 to arms 54 on a rock-shaft 55. A two-armed lever 56 on the shaft 55 is connected by slotted links 60, 57 to a lever 63, the fulcrum 66 of which is carried by an arm 68 on a shaft 69 provided with a hand lever 70. Fixed and adjustable weights 64, 65 respectively are provided on the ends of the lever 63 and in the normal position of the parts with the hand-lever 70 in the mid position, the transfer member is held out of contact with both the original and the cylinder 14. The transfer member 13 is provided with a stop 33 cooperating with a pivoted stop 34 and an adjustable stop 35 on one of the levers 26. In operation the carriage 22 is moved inwardly to a position determined by its stops and the transfer member is turned till the stop 33 engages the stop 34. The lever 70 is then turned to the left to raise one end of the lever 63 thereby throwing a strain of the link 59 and causing the transfer member to be lowered into contact with the original. The carriage 22 is then moved onwardly to transfer the design to the member 13 and the lever 70 is again turned to neutral position. The stop 34 is then turned to allow the member 13 to be rotated till the stop 33 engages the stop 35. After turning the cylinder 14 to the required position, the lever 70 is moved to the right to depress the lever 63 and, through the link 60, turn the member 13 into contact with the cylinder 14. The latter is then rotated by the hand wheel 18 to receive the impression from the member 13. The link 57 is adjustably connected to the levers 56, 63 so that the pressure of the member 13 on the original 12 may be equal to, or may differ as required from, its pressure on the cylinder 14. In preparing .a number of cylinders 14 for multicolour printing, the designs on the rollers subsequent to the first must be slightly differently arranged to allow for shrinkage or expansion of the paper between the various impressions. This is provided for by the provision of micrometer adjustments for the stop 35 and for the cursor 40 and also if desired for the stops 38. A modified construction for positioning the cylinder longitudinally on the guides 15 is shown in Fig 6. A bar 42 provided with slots 45 is arranged on the machine frame and within the. slots are arranged adjustable stops 46 co-operating with a pivoted pointer 47 carried by the frame 37. The bar is rotatable about its axis to bring any series of stops 46 into operative position. A hand wheel 48 fixed to one end of the bar and threaded into the bearing 50 is provided for fine adjustment of the bar for multicolour work. In another form of the machine, the original is mounted on a rotatable carrier instead of on a reciprocating bed.
