Transferring designs; printing on rollers.-In apparatus for transferring a design from an original on to a printing plate carried by a cylindrical support in which the transfer is effected by frictional rolling contact of the printing plate and original, the support is carried by a pivoted frame by which it is moved into and out of contact with the original. The original 5 is mounted on the upper portion 40 of a carriage 6 movable on rails 7 on a carriage 8 which can be reciprocated on rails 9 on a bed 4 by an endless chain 19 and hand-wheel 21. The inward movement of the carriage 8 is limited by projections upon it engaging adjustable and removable stops on the bed -4. Horizontal and vertical adjustment of the original may be effected by screws 42 and angular adjustment into two positions at right angles to one another is provided for by mounting the part 40 on a vertical pivot and providing it with stops co-operating with stops on the carriage 6. A gauge is provided for initially positioning the original comprising a transparent plate bearing crossed hair-lines and having ball-ended plugs engaging sockets in the part 40. The cylinder 11 carrying the plate to receive the transferred designs is mounted in arms 12 pivoted to the machine frame and connected bv a link 26 and crank-arm 27 to a shaft 28 on which is a lever 29 carrying a weight 30 which normally tends to hold the cylinders 11 in contact with the original 5. A hand lever 31 operatively connected to an arm 32 carrying a roller 33 is provided to raise the cylinder 11. The angular position of the cylinder 11 prior to receiving an impression is determined by series of stops 22 on heads secured to the cylinder co-operating with forked stops 23 carried by the arms 12. The carriage 6 is moved upon the rails 7 to determine the position of the transferred design longitudinally of the cylinder 11, by a leading screw 13 working in a nut which can be rotated for fine adjustment of the position of the original, by a worm 15 operated by a. handwheel 14 and engaging a worm-wheel on the nut. A cursor 17 moving with the carriage 6 over a fixed scale on the carriage 8 is provided to facilitate the adjustment. In preparing a number of printing plates for multicolour printing, the designs on the plates subsequent to the first must be slightly differently arranged to allow for shrinkage or expansion of the paper between the various impressions. This is provided for by the provision of micrometer adjustments for the cursor 17 and of the stops 22. Instead of the cursor 17 and co-operating scale, a stop bar constructed as described with reference to Fig. 6 of Specification 300,518 may be employed. The original may be mounted on an oscillating or rotating support constructed as described with reference to Fig. 7 of Specification 300.518.
