Abstract
300,272. Bundy, H. W. Nov. 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Cased forms; tubes; rods and bars.-Multi-ply strip metal stock for making tubes &c. is formed by drawing a number of separate plies through a bath of solder while the plies are held separated and then bringing the plies together so as to solder them. The stock may have two, three or more plies, the outer or inner ply of a two-ply stock being of non-corrodible metal according to the purpose for which a tube made therefrom is to be used and the outer plies of a three-ply stock being also of non-corrodible metal. The other ply may be of steel for strengthening the tube. The plies are drawn from rolls 1 over separate rolls 4 in an acid bath, and after passing over roll 5, are drawn over separate rolls 8 in a solder bath 6. The three-ply strips may then pass through spring-pressed dies 11, 12 for removing excess solder, then over chain-driven rollers 10, 15, and under a geared roller 9, and then through compressing rollers 17 some of which are mounted inside and others outside a cooling bath 16. The strip is finally wound on a drum 19 or supplied direct to a tube making machine. The solder is kept molten during passage between the rollers 10, 15 by a burner 14. The strips after leaving the solder bath may pass through separate wiping dies and then over separate sets of rollers prior to being superposed and united by the compressing rollers. The lower wiping die 12 may be provided with a recess into which the upper die 11 is pressed by a spring.
