Abstract

300,161. Davis, F. W., and Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Co., Ltd. Aug. 4, 1927. Anchoring.-An airship mooring- mast has a conical cup member f carried upon a crosshead g secured to two recoil cylinders h slung by arms i<1> from a horizontal shaft i carried by a vertical pillar b rotatable about a vertical axis. The pillar b rotates about or within a central tubular member c at the top of the mast. The cylinders h are double, the crosshead g being connected to an inner cylinder h<1> having a piston k connected by a hollow piston-rod l to a crosshead m connected bv a link n to the pillar b so that the inclination of the cylinders as well as the extension of the cross head g can be controlled by fluid pressure. The axial movement of the cylinders may be effected by a separate cylinder or by a small motor. Alternatively a separate cylinder acting upon the crosshead m may control the inclination of the cylinders h in which case the cylinders h need not be underslung. The cylinders are locked in the horizontal position by bolts actuated by a plunger g<2> of a fluid pressure cylinder. The cup f is locked in the crosshead g by radiating bolts f<1> and a sleeve u behind the crosshead g is locked to a member connecting the outer part of the cylinders h by similar bolts f<2> actuated by an edge cam timed by a fluid pressure motor f<5>, or electrically. The member b also may be locked or frictionally held against rotation. Springs t or dashpots take up shock upon the mooring arm when in use. The mooring rope passes through the cup f and over a pulley p down to winding-gear in the interior of the mast. The various fluid pressure connections pass through the shaft i.
