Density separators.-A centrifugal separator for liquids has main separating discs 7 and intermediate central discs 8; the latter discs 8 divide the spaces between the main discs into annular spaces 11, 12 which are in communication with groups of channels running to the inlet and outlet. The stack inside the bowl 6 is built up of units, each consisting of main and intermediate blades 7, 8, Fig. 3. Holes through the units form channels 13 when the stack is assembled, and these channels are in communication with the spaces 11 beneath the intermediate discs 8. Radial apertures 14 in the units communicate between the central channel 9 and the spaces 12 above the intermediate discs 8. The liquid to be treated is supplied to the central channel 9 and passes through the apertures 14 to the spaces 12. The heavy component moves outwards to the wall of the bowl and passes up through the outlet 22 to the chamber 19 and discharge pipe 21. The light component passes inwards under the discs 8 to the channel 13, the chamber 18 and discharge pipe 20. In a modification the incoming liquid is led under the bottom plate of the stack to the circumference of the bowl. A modified form to work horizontally is shown in Fig. 8. The liquid is supplied to ani annular feed chamber 47 at one end of the stater 44, and passes from this chamber through the passage 61 to the spaces between the discs. The heavy component passes outwards along the inside of the discs 59 to the volute 49 and the discharge pipe 50; the flow is assisted by pump blades 58. The light component passes inwards under the intermediate discs 60 to the channel 62, the annular chamber 56, the volute 51 and discharge pipe 52; the flow is assisted by pump blades 57. Choke valves may be arranged in each discharge pipe 50, 52. Pipes 63, 64, 65 serve to furnish air or water to the space between the rotor and the stator.
