OENTRIFUGAL PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1921.
Application filed January 9, 1920. Serial No. 350,347.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PONTUS Osrnxnnao, a citizen of the United States, and resident of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to the bowlstructure of centrifugal pumps.
Centrifugal pump bowls as heretofore formed require the use of cores in casting and are somewhat difiicult to properly machine and finish to secure the best results in their practical application.
It is the object of my invention to provide a pump bowl that will be simple in form, that can be cast without the use of a core, in which the several parts are easily accessible for finishing. A further object is to provide a bowl of the character indicated in which the several chambers are easily assembled and connected to the pump casings.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section through one-half of an assembled centrifugal pump embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 isa perspective view of one of the bowls shown in section in Fig. 1, part being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view through another embodiment of my invention.
Fig; 4 is a vertical section through one half of a one stage pump embodying my invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates a pump shaft mounted in bearing 2 and carrying a plurality of runners 3 as particularly set forth in my Patout No. 1,283,879, dated Nov. 5, 1918, the bearing 2 being a part of the main bearing bowl & and connected thereto by webs A portion of a suction casing is indicated at 6 and a portion of a discharge casing at 7 the latter being screwed into the top of bearing bowl at as shown at 8. The particular type of bowl forming the subject matter of this invention is shown clearly at 9.
Eachbowl 9 comprises a cylindrical wall of suitable size threaded upon one inner edge as at 10, its upper edge being carried inwardly toward the axis of the bowl as at 11 to form a discharge opening 12 through which shaft 1 and the pumpedwater passes. \Vithin the shoulder 13 formed as shown and described are positioned a plurality of vanes 14,, arranged to receive water discharged into bowl 9 and divert it upwardly and inwardly to discharge opening 12. the surface 15 being properly curved for this purpose.
On the outer surface of bowl 9, concentrlc with opening 12 and somewhat smaller 111 diameter than bowl 9, is formed an annular boss 16 threaded on its outer surface as at 17 and sloping inwardly toward openmg 12 as at 18 and forming a shoulder 19 in which the lower portion of runner 3 cperates. On ring or boss 16 are formed a plurality of diffusion vanes 20 so proportioned as to closely approach the lower edges of vanes 14 when placed in position and suitably proportioned and formed to receive water directly from runners 3 and divert the same upwardly to vanes 14.
In assembling this form of my invention it is only necessary to attach as many bowls together as required by engaging the threaded portion 1701 one bowl with the threaded discharge bowl 1, and the threaded portion 10 of the same bowl with the threaded portion 17 of the next lower bowl The successive bowls are positioned by threading into one another as described until the last bowl is reached, whereupon a bottom member 21 is screwed into position on said last mentioned bowl. This terminal member'21 is formed with boss 16, threaded portion 17, surface 18, shoulder 19 and vanes 20, but instead of having a bowl portion 9 it is provided with flange 22 projecting downwardly from the inner edge of flange 11 as shown in Fig. 1, and is threaded" as at 23 to engage threaded suction casing 6 as at 24.
From the above description it may be seen that each bowl is a simple open casting that may be quickly assembled in any required number according to the number of runners to be used.
In another form of this invention as shown in Fig. 3 the vanes 1.4 are provided with a ring 25 extending over the upper surface of runner 3 to the hub 3 thereof, this construction effectually preventing friction of the rising water upon the rotating top portion of runner 3. The object is of course to pass the rising water through opening 12 with a substantially vertical movement and to eliminate as much as practicable the rotary motion imparted thereto by the rotating parts of runner 3.
The runners 3 are preferably made with a hub 3 extending upwardly and downwardly from a flange 26 to engage the ends of the hubs of the runners positioned above and below, and the runner blades 27 depend from flange 26 and carry a ring 28 adapted to rotate freely in shoulder 19 and having a central opening of substantially the same diameter as the central opening 12 of the bowl with which it is to be used.
.In Fig. 4 it is shown that this construction is 'as readily adapted for use with a single runner as with a plurality of runners.
It is, understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the specific forms of the invention set forth in the above specification but to include all variations in form, proportions, construction and methods .of assembly and operation that may be included in the appended claims. It should be pointed out that the construction herein set forth provides an exterior pump surface that is devoid of material inequalities thereby facilitating its placing in and removal from a 'of saidyanes being formed integrally with I claim 1 1. In acentrifugal pump, a bowl comprisingacylindrical wall section adapted to be attached to upper and lower sections, and have a runner mounted therein, a flange arranged on said wall section adjacent to and within one end" thereof and extending-within the radius of the runner mounted therein, a diffusion vane arranged on one side of said flange andextending within the radius of the said runner, and a diffusion vane arranged on the opposite side of said flange and extending inwardly to a point adjacent the outer perimeter of the said runner, both said flange.
2. Ina centrifugal pump, a bowl comprlsing a cylindrical wall section adapted to be i attached to upper and lower sections, and
have a runner mounted therein, a flange arranged on said wall section adjacent to and within one end thereof and extending within the radius of the runner mounted therein, a diffusion vane arranged on the lower side of said flange and extending within the radius of the said runner, and a diffusion vane arranged on the upper side of said flange and extending inwardly to a point adjacent the outer perimeter of the said runner, both ofsaid vane-s being formed integrally with said flange. a
1 In a centrlfugal pump, a bowl comprismg a plate having a central opening therein i for the discharge of water therethrough, an
annular andinteriorly threaded flange extending from one side thereof at its outer edge, a diffusion vane arranged in the shoulder between said plate and said flange, and

A centrifugal pump including a shaft, a runner mounted thereon including a plurality of depending vanes supporting an annular plate provided with a central opening for the passage of waterztherethrough, and a bowl having afshoulder formed thereinto receive said plate and a discharge opening of substantially the same diameter as theopening in said'plate, said bowl having an exteriorly threaded flange to engage the interiorly, threaded portion of the member having also a diffusion vane arranged'thereon to direct water, into said discharge opening and a diffusion vane arranged thereon to receive the water passed through said dlsrharge opening and sald runner.
7.- A centrifugal pump including a shaft,
a runner mounted thereon, a bearing for said shaft adjacent said runner, an interiorly threaded bowl formed integrally with saidbearing, and aobowl operatively mounted with relation to said runner, said bowl having an exteriorly threaded boss adapted to engage said interiorly-threaded first mentioned bowl, an interiorly threaded flange adapted to, engage .the -exteriorly threaded portion: ofthe adjacent member when assembled, an inner discharge opening communicating with the inner portion of said runner, a diffusion vane arranged therein to discharge water through said discharge opening, thereon to receive water'discharged by said runner. y
