Alternating-current commutator machines. - A centrifugal switch, which will operate with a snap action and have no tendency to return until its speed of rotation has substantially decreased, uses rotatable weights acting on a spring member of such form that its resistance to the centrifugal force of the weights decreases as it is deflected. As applied to a short-circuiting device for the commutator of a repulsion-induction motor, an annular spring member 12 with a concave surface is secured to the shaft 11 between collars 13, 14 and is flexed by weights 18 attached to itself. A spring 15 between a spacing washer 15<a> and the collar 13 resists flexing of the member 12. In operation, as the centrifugal force of the weights 18 decreases the concavity of the member 12, the resistance of the latter decreases until it is snapped into engagement with the contact surfaces of the commutator segments 10<a>, and there is no tendency for the switch to open until the speed has decreased considerably.
