Abstract
297,564. Blakeborough, R. A., Brotherton, C., and Broadhead, J. B. Sept. 8, 1927. Air traps.-In a valve for automatically venting air from water mains and the like, comprising a buoyant member g slidable vertically in a chamber a disposed above and open to the main d, the member g carrying at its upper end a valve j adapted to co-operate with a vent opening formed in the top of the chamber, an adjustablyweighted lever h tends to move the member in a valve-closing direction. As shown, the valve j has an axial passage j<1> controlled by a needle valve k carried by a buoyant ball m slidable vertically in a cage n arranged in the upper end of the hollow member g, which latter is provided with ports g<2>. A stem g<1> projecting from the lower end of the member g through a stuffing-box f is closed except for an outlet passage g<3> controlled by a valve o connected to the lever h by a link o<1> in such a way that the valve is opened when the member g has descended a certain distance and is closed as the member rises. A valve e is provided for isolating the chamber a from the main when required, and the chamber is provided with a drain-cock s and an air-cock r. Small accumulations of air under pressure are dealt with by the valve k. Large accumulations of air cause the descent of the member g, which contains water entering through the ports g<2>, thereby opening the valves j, o. Water escapes from the member g through the passage g<3>, the member rises, closing the valve o, and water again enters the member g, causing the valve k to close. The lever h may be arranged to act on either the lower or upper end of the member g. In a modification for dealing solely with air in volume, the valves k, o are omitted, the member g being completely closed, while in a further modification for dealing solely with air under pressure, the valve j is in the form of a needle valve. For dealing with air both in volume and under pressure, two separate valves according to the two last-mentioned modifications may be arranged in the chamber a.
