Azo dyes, soluble metal compounds of. - Azodyestuffs, containing metal, such as chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, cobalt, vanadium, uranium, titanium, tin, or aluminium, and in which molecules of the same or different azo dyestuffs are united by the metal or metals, are obtained by treating a metal compound of one azo dyestuff with the same or a different azo dyestuff capable of fixing metal or by treating a mixture of different azo dyestuffs with agents yielding metal. The products are applicable for dyeing wool, silk, cotton, or leather, or for colouring varnishes. The following examples are specified. (1) The chromium compound of the dyestuff 1 : 2- aminonaphthol-4-sulphonic acid # alpha-naphthol is boiled under reflux with the dyestuff 6-nitro- 2-aminophenol-4-sulphonic acid # #-naphthol in a solution feebly acidified with acetic acid; the product dyes wool and silk in fast blackish marine-blue tints. (2) An aqueous suspension of the dyestuff from the nitrated diazo compound of 1 : 2-aminonaphthol-4-sulphonic acid and #- naphthol, and of the reduction product of this dyestuff, is subjected to prolonged boiling under reflux with a solution of sodium acetate and chromium formate, common salt being added towards the end of the reaction: the product dyes wool and silk in fast blue-black tints. (3) Wool is dyed a fast dark marine-blue in a bath containing the dyestuff of example 1 in dilute sulphuric acid. (4) Ordinary or weighted silk is dyed a fast blue-black in a bath containing the dyestuff of example 2 in dilute acetic acid.
