Abstract

297,237. French, L. O. April 27, 1927. Electromagnets.- The poles of an electromagnet for controlling the fuel supply of high-speed internal-combustion engines are brought into concentric proximity and the diameter of the armature is slightly greater than that of the inner edge of the outer pole member. The poles 8, 12 of an iron-clad electromagnet 7, 13 are of converging conicity (to prevent magnetic leakage) with an interposed sealing gasket 17 of brass, or other nonmagnetic material secured by screwing the outer pole member 13 on to the base 9 of the inner pole member 7. The armature 32 overlaps the inner edge of the outer pole 12 and is carried by the stem of a needle valve 31 working in a casing 26, Fig. 1, held against an annular seating in the pole 12 by a sleeve 18 screwed into an extension of the pole, the lower end of the sleeve being flanged at 22 to support the valve seating 23. In a modification, Fig. 4, the sleeve 18<1> is internally stepped to carry a short casing 26' and the valve seating 23<1> is secured by a flanged nut 36. The valve is normally closed by a spring 33 and in this position the upper surface of the armature is flush with the end of the casing 26 or 23<1>, washers 27, 37 providing for adjustment in this respect. A further recess 35 in the pole faces provides the magnetic gap. The valve lift is determined by an adjustable stop rod 41 preferably of magnetic material, slidably mounted in the hollow core 7, and movable beyond the pole face, a block 45 of nonmagnetic material such as brass or tungsten being inset in the armature.
