Abstract

296,527. Croad, A. K., (Hanovia Chemical & Manufacturing Co.). July 27, 1927. Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.- In water-cooled mercury-vapour arc-lamps for use in therapeutics, the arc tube 5 comprises an inverted U- shape loop in a gasfilled quartz jacket 11 uniformly spaced from the tube 5, un jacketed parts 8 of the tube 5 extending horizontally at right angles to the plane of the loop and the whole being enclosed in a, water chamber 14 with a window 16, of quartz or other material transparent to ultra-violet rays, parallel to the plane of the loop. The jacket 8 may be filled with air, oxygen, nitrogen, argon, helium, hydrogen, ammonia or carbon dioxide, the cooling effect of the water on the tube 5 and so the characteristics of the arc varying with the nature and pressure of the filling. The extensions 8 are partially filled with mercury. The lamp has two or more electrodes for use with direct current and three or more electrodes for use with alternating current.
