Electromagnetic c u r r e n t meters.- An ammeter, particularly for use on the dashboard of an automobile, has an armature 22 of magnetic material controlled by a horse-shoe permanent magnet 28 and means for clamping a, conductor 30, carrying the current to be measured on the exterior of the casing in a predetermined position such that the armature is deflected by the magnetic field, which extends within the casing 10. As shown, a single loop of the conductor 30 is arranged with the two unidirectional strands fixed directly to the rear of the armature 22 and held by a U-shaped portion 33 of the clamp 32, which is fastened by a bolt 34 and wing nut 36. The clamp is of steel or other magnetic material so as to concentrate the magnetic field. The permanent magnet may be a straight bar instead of a horseshoe. In a modification the clamp of magnetic material is omitted and the loop of conductor is held by clips punched out from the back of the case.
