Abstract
295,268. Hammond, C. F., and Shackleton, W. April 7, 1927. Atmospheric gas, spray, and pulverulent fuel burners; subaqueous burners. - A diffuser or mixing device for supplying combustible mixtures to burners and internal combustion engines comprises a pile of superposed flat or dished plates or discs formed with slots, grooves, or corrugations to divide a gaseous fluid passing under pressure between neighbouring discs into numerous small streams or jets. The diffuser is mainly intended for supplying powdered or heavy liquid fuel to submerged flame burners but is suitable also for use with light liquid or gaseous fuel. Fig. 1 shows the upper part of a burner in which liquid fuel overflowing the serrated edge h of a trough a, after being preliminarily atomized by jets of air or superheated steam impinging on it from conical nozzles k<1>, l<1>, passes through an annular space m to an annular passage n enclosed between two annular piles o, p of discs from which issue numerous small streams or jets of air so that complete diffusion of the fuel particles throughout the combustion air is obtained. The combustion mixture is conducted from the space n through a flame guard to a high velocity mixture passage and thence to a combustion chamber as described in Specification 261,808 or to the induction pipe of an internal combustion engine. Oil is supplied to the trough a through a passage f and relatively high-pressure air is supplied to the jets k<1>, l<1> at an inlet i. Fig. 3 shows the upper part of a burner in which powdered fuel supplied to an annular rotating ledge 15 falls through vertical ducts 16 in a plug 14 into an annular space 1 between piles 2, 3 of dished rings from which issue numerous air jets. Alternate rings 5 of each pile may be formed, as shown in the lower half of Fig. 6, with a number of air inlet notches 6 communicating with keyhole delivery slots 8 formed, as shown in the upper half of Fig. 6, in the intermediate rings 7. The direction of the delivery slots is such that swirls in opposite directions are imparted to the air issuing from the outer and inner piles of rings. Small piles of rings may be spaced apart by thick washers 10. Fig. 7 shows a burner in which air jets are projected perpendicularly from between flat rings 17 constructed as shown in Fig. 6 into gas passing through an annular passage 18. Fig. 11 shows a cross section through a burner in which air and gas issue from passages 24, 28 respectively through the spaces between alternating plain and corrugated rings into a passage 25 leading to the burner nozzle. The corrugated rings may be replaced by laminµ of wire netting. The piles of rings may contain at intervals baffle rings having eccentric peripheries so arranged as to cause the fuel stream to follow a helical path.
