Abstract

294,702. Downing, P. H. Feb. 6, 1928. Springs, arrangement of and mounting bodies and undercarriages on.-In a suspension system of the type comprising a leaf spring 11 or resilient device connected to the vehicle frame, and a bell-crank lever 18, 19 pivotally mounted at 20 on the vehicle frame and having sustantially vertical and horizontal arms operatively connected to the spring and to the vehicle axle, the connection between the bell-crank lever and the wheel axle comprises means such as a link 25 allows the axle to move relatively to the lever in the direction of the length of the vehicle. Shock absorbers comprising two arms 33, 34 ,Fig. 3, pivoted at 37 and connected at their outer ends to the vehicle frame and axle respectively restrain the axle from moving transversely. The transverse laminated spring 11 is anchored at its centre to the crossmember 16 and each end is connected through a Hooke's joint 23 and link 22 to the sustantially vertical arm 18 of the bell-crank which is pivoted to a bracket 17 depending from the vehicle frame. The end of the arm 19 of the bell-crank is similarly connected to the axle or axle casing 15. The bell-cranks sustaining the front axle are pivoted on a rod 27 extending across the vehicle and the front axle 32 is stayed by radius rods 29 connected to the rod 27 by a universal joint 30. A universal joint may be placed at each end of the links 22.
