Abstract

294,509. Read, F. W., and Greville, E. E. T. April 20, 1927. Light, treating diseases with.-Two different sources of ultra-violet light, for example a mercury vapour lamp and a carbon or tungsten arc lamp, are mounted upon the same stand. As shown, the stand 1 is provided with a sliding member 4 counterweighed at 5 and having clamping means 6. A cross-bar 8 preferably of rectangular cross section is carried in roller bearings 7 in the member 4. The lamps are provided with reflectors 11, 12 and are carried by plates 10 or by forked members on the ends of the bar 8. Switches and other control means such as one or more rheostats 13 are provided on the stand 1 or on the lamp supports; these may be such as to permit the use of only one lamp at a time or of both lamps simultaneously. When one lamp only is to be used it is pulled away from the stand by sliding the bar 8 which is then locked in position by means 9. For striking the mercury vapour arc one of the lamp housings 11 is mounted on a member 14 rotatable about the axis of the bar 8 and connected to the bar by flange members 14a, 8a, stops 15, 16 being provided to position the lamp in use. In a modified form the bar 8 is replaced by a bell-crank lever pivoted to the member 4 and carrying the lamp at its free ends. A second arm, connected to the stand by a universal joint or otherwise, and carrying a radiant heat or other lamp, may also be provided.
