294,360. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges., (Assignees of Farbwerke vorm. Meister, Lucius, & Briining). May 4, 1927. Divided on and addition to 249,891. Samples furnished. Amino-benzanthronyl mercaptans, sulphides and disulphides; dibenzanthrone dyes.-Condensation products of the benzanthrone series are made by using ammonia instead of an amine or amide in the process of the parent Specification; the product yield vat dyestuffs when heated with an alkali. In examples (1) monobrom-Bz 1 : Bz 1<1>-benzanthronyl sulphide (example 3 of Specification 249,890) is heated in an autoclave with concentrated ammonia solution and copper sulphate, (2) dibrom-Bz 1 : Bz 1<1>-benzanthronyl sulphide (example 4 of Specification 249,890) is heated in an autoclave with concentrated ammonia solution, ammonium chloride, copper powder and copper sulphate ; the product is probably a diamino-Bz 1 : Bz 1<1>-benzanthronyl sulphide, and (3) the amino- Bz 1 : Bz 1<1>-benzanthronyl sulphide, obtained as described in example 1, is heated with potassium hydroxide and isopropyl alcohol: the product, presumably an amino-isodibenzanthrone, dyes cotton from a hydrosulphite vat violet-blue, changing to blue on treatment with dilute hypochlorite solution.
