294,253. Budd Manufacturing Co., E. G., (Assignees of Smidth, L.). July 21, 1927, [Convention date]. Grant of Patent opposed. Condensation products of formaldehyde with urea and thiourea.-Urea is condensed in aqueous solution with formaldehyde, which is preferably slightly acid, at a relatively low temperature, e.g. at 25-50‹ C., the mixture is distilled in vacuo at a higher temperature, but preferably below 100‹ C., and thiourea is added either before or after the distillation. The mixture is then distilled again at a still higher temperature, e.g. 100-200‹ C. The viscous product may be poured into a. mould and allowed to cool, and the brittle soluble product so obtained may then be heated, e.g. at 70-90‹ C., for a considerable time, when it becomes tough and insoluble. Alternatively, the brittle soluble product mav be ground, mixed with fillers &c., and moulded under heat and pressure, or the viscous product obtained after the second distillation may be subjected directly to high pressure and temperatuure.
