Capsules and the like, applying.- Relates to machines for capsuling jars &c. of the type in which the covers are cut from a strip of material fed from a roll and applied to the jar with or without an additional lining. According to the invention the cutting and sealing mechanism is carried on a refracting table 10 which is shown at the top of its stroke in Fig. 1 in contact with a buffer 7 whereat the cutting operation takes place, while the sealing operation is effected at the other end of the stroke. Paper strip 12 is fed from a roll and adhesive is applied on the underside thereof by a brush 15 from a tank 14. Discs 12* of stiffer material are caused to adhere to the strip by a presser plate 16 and the complete cover is cut out of a circular knife 20. Jars to be sealed are placed on the base of the machine and are centred by spring-pressed balls 32 as the table 10 descends. When the table 10 is inverted the presser mechanism continues to descend and the cut out cover is carried by the mouth of the jar into a rubber ring 23 which is carried in sector shaped sockets on pivotal arms 24<x>. During this operation the cover is located on the jar by a resiliently supported presser disc 25. The waste presser ring 23 fastens the cover to the jar by virtue of the adhesive on the underside margin thereof and effectively seals the jar. The discs 12* are fed in from a cylindrical pile by a slide operating at right angles to the direction of motion of the strip 12, and the strip has a step-by-step motion synchronising with the reciprocatory movement of the table 10.
