Abstract
294,102. Junkers, H. July 16, 1927, [Convention date]. Riveting; riveted joints; tube expanders.- Riveted joints where the work is accessible only from one side are made by employing a rivet with a hollow stem closed at one end, inserting this end so that it is on the inaccessible side, then deforming the closed end into a fixing head by a tool inserted into the open end of the stem. A suitable hand tool for deforming the heads comprises a pair of shanks having protuberances 13, 14, Fig. 3, adapted to be inserted in the rivet 3 and spread apart by pressing their handles 15, 16 together. The shanks are pivoted together at 10 and the tool is slightly rotated after each com- 'pression of the handles until the whole circumference of the head has been deformed. In a modification, the tool is mounted in a bush 20, Fig. 5, the handles are closed by a recessed member 40, normally pressed away from the work by a spring 52, a crank handle 46 being provided for rotating the tool. In a modification of this tool. for use where the work is not sufficiently rigid to take thrust, the handles are closed by opposed wedge-members 81, 91, Fig. 6, operated by pivoted handles connected to pairs of shanks 83, 93. In a further modification, the head is deformed by a disc 153, Fig. 13, eccentrically mounted in a block 150 provided with a part 151 shaped to enter the rivet, the block being slightly rotated for each turn of the shank 154 to cause the rivet head to be deformed around its whole circumference. A further modification comprises a single shank 122, Fig. 10, formed with an incline co-aperating with a rounded surface 141 normally raised from the work by a spring 160. The tool is mounted in a casing 130, the lower end of which is slotted to provide springy portions which engage the part 1 of the rivet in the manner of a chuck, cam surfaces 134, 135 closing the lower parts of the casing inwardly under the pressure of the spring 160. The spring is compressed, when it is desired to release the work, by hand actuated pins 165, 166. In the other forms of the tool, the head of the rivet mav be prevented from turning with the tool by the provision of projections on the tool holder engaging notches in the flange of the rivet.
